TIP OF THE WEEK! Simple Steps for Fall Garage Organization 1. Purchase tall sturdy shelving. Plastic 72" x 36" shelving works in most garages. 2. Take everything out of the garage and sort "like with like" items. 3. Create a donate, trash, recycle, and hazardous chemical piles. 4. Focus on long term storage of items. Items like binned keepsakes, clothing or documents can be stored high. 5. Seasonal items should be placed into bins and labeled. 6. Lawn or snow equipment should be placed near the door depending upon the season. 7. Bikes and toys should be placed near the doorway on racks in bins creating a "home" for each. 8. Store bikes off-season on ceiling or wall hooks. 9. Ceiling racks work well for coolers and lawn furniture cushions. The idea is to put the items used most frequently towards the front of any storage spaces. Items used less frequently will be more hidden. By focusing on making it easy to put things away, you make it more likely that you will be successful at maintaining the garage. Photo by Aaron Burden on Unsplash ... See more

TIP OF THE WEEK! Perfectionism. People ask if my house is perfectly organized. It’s not perfectly organized because perfection isn’t necessary. If you’re a perfectionist, you need to get out of your own way. Perfect is not the goal. Done is perfect. And the sooner you start clearing clutter, the sooner you’ll be done. TIP OF THE WEEK! Not knowing what to do with unwanted stuff. This is a big one. But guess what? You don’t have to take on the job of figuring out what to do with stuff because there are organizations that are really good at that – places like Goodwill and The Salvation Army. And they’ll even come and get it from your driveway! You don’t have to find new homes for your stuff. All you have to do is go to Donationtown.org to find a charity near you that will pick up for free. (Written by Donna Smallin Kuper) ... See more

TIP OF THE WEEK! Fear creates clutter. You think, “I might need this someday.” Right? Well, maybe you will. But if you haven’t needed it in a year – or 20 years – you probably won’t need it in the next year or 20 years. And if you do, could you maybe borrow it from a friend? Sure. A good question to ask yourself is “What’s the worst possible thing that could happen if I needed this again?” You could probably beg, borrow or steal – I mean buy – another one. Right? TIP OF THE WEEK! Homelessness is another reason why clutter accumulates. How can you put something away if it doesn’t have a home? You have to find homes for the homeless. Or in other words, find a place for everything so that you can always put everything in its place. Be mindful about the plight of the homeless when you go shopping. Before you buy something, you should know exactly where it’s going in your home – or what you plan to remove to make room for it. (Written by Donna Smallin Kuper) ... See more

How to put a stop to later-it-is? Get in the habit of asking yourself: Is this where this belongs? Try to follow this motto - Don’t just put it down. Put it away. (Written by Donna Smallin Kuper) ... TIP OF THE WEEK! Secret to Successful Food Shopping Keep a wipe-off board on the refrigerator or pantry door for everyone to write down what grocery items need to be purchased. ORGANIZING TIP OF THE WEEK! Label, Label, Label! When you label a drawer or container, you're not only telling yourself what goes in there. You're telling your entire family.
TIP OF THE WEEK! Keep only the things that have function and bring joy. Keep only the things you love and need. Just because someone gave it to you doesn't mean you have to keep it, after all, whose mantle is it anyway? Regift it, donate it, or give to a friend who admired the item in the past. I've done this with a collection of figurines that meant more to a friend than me. Pick at least 5 of those things and put them directly into a donation box. ... See more
TIP OF THE WEEK! Staying Organized The hardest part of organizing is maintaining your hard work. So try not to make it seem like work. I suggest a regular time of day when you spend 10 minutes straightening up, and get the whole family involved. Create a "declutter playlist" and pump it while you all put away your things. Working as a team will make the work go faster and is good blast of exercise. ... See more
TIP OF THE WEEK! Clear Storage Containers Will Help You Save Money When you can't find what you want when you want it, you may find yourself making unnecessary purchases. That costs money you can't afford to waste. Clear containers with clear labels make it as easy as possible to see what you have, which makes items easier to find. When items are easy to find, they get used more often and get circulated more freely. On the other hand, items hidden in opaque containers, like shopping bags, cardboard boxes, and baskets, tend to stay there because one is more inclined to forget what one can't see. ... See more

TIP OF THE WEEK! Daily Mail Sorting - Top Organizing Habit Nothing is more relentless than the daily mail. Fight back with the divide-and-conquer approach. Mail stops being mail the second it comes out of the mailbox. It's now bills, statements, magazines, and loads of junk mail. Sorting this should take no more than 3 minutes, otherwise it becomes a burden to be avoided. You can pay, file, and read later, but toss the junk immediately. ... See more
